The American League is officially on notice. While the Orioles have been competitive all summer long, they took it to the next level this past weekend. By taking three out of four from the Rays, the O’s vaulted to the top of both the AL East and the junior circuit at large. There is something special brewing in Birdland.
Gunnar Henderson had himself an impactful series that included a hustle triple, a massive home run, and defensive highlights all over the diamond. All of the sudden he feels like a favorite for AL Rookie of the Year.
Félix Bautista is vying for his own award, potentially bypassing relief-specific accolades altogether in pursuit of the ultimate pitching prize. It makes sense that the best closer in the league would under consideration for Cy Young. If the Mountain stays on his current trajectory he will earn more than a few down-ballot votes.
And what’s even scarier about these Orioles is that they might be getting even better. The trade deadline looms, and the front office has already made a minor addition in reliever Shintaro Fujinami. Recent reports indicate that they have asked the Angels about Shohei Ohtani, although ESPN’s Buster Olney says that the Mike Elias-led group is viewed as “measured buyers” rather than pushing all of their chips in.
This week’s episode will cover all of the news, and then wrap up with an in-depth discussion of the upcoming deadline. What will the Orioles do? What should they do? And who, specifically, do we have our eyes on?
