Angelos to sell Orioles? | Ep. 120
The sale of the Orioles is not imminent, but it sure sounds like the Angelos family is kicking the tires on a potential suitor.
The people of Baltimore have a complicated relationship with the Angelos family. You see, the Angelos family owns the city’s baseball team, and the folks that live in the city hate the Angeloses. Very complicated.
Of course, it’s not that simple. The Angelos family is not entirely reviled. They are Baltimore born and bred, which earns them a certain amount of grace locally. And the very beginning of the family’s rein was pretty neat. Peter spent a lot of money, and the team was good initially. But those positive vibes waned in the late 90’s and throughout the first decade of the 2000’s when the organization couldn’t compile one season with a winning record.
Now, the club is on the upswing and seemingly headed in the right direction under the match of GM Mike Elias. But with Peter’s health failing it has fallen to son John to run the business side of the organization. His defect seems to be that his foot and mouth are magnetized to one another.
So you can understand the joy that emanated from the Baltimore Metro area when rumor spread that the Angelos family may be looking to offload the Orioles to someone else, specifically another local billionaire, David Rubenstein.
Nothing is official. In fact, reporting came out recently that doused the potential of a sale, at least for now while the patriarch Peter is still alive. But it does seem clear that John and the other Angeloses are getting their house in order for the day that it makes sense to sell the Birds.
Jesse is the solo host for this episode where he discusses the Bloomberg report that came out that stated Rubenstein was interested in acquiring the Baltimore Orioles. He talks about who David Rubenstein is, the possibility that he actually acquires the Orioles, and what it would mean for our beloved team if they were sold.
